Mae Hong Son is also goes by the names Maehongsorn Maehongson, or Mae Hong Sorn. It is a reference to the northern province of Changwat in Thailand. Loosely translated to English, Mae Hong Son means the city of the three mists. It covers a total land area of 13, 814 Km2. The landscape is covered with mist all year round. the area is known as an idea elephant training ground. There are daily flights to the airport in Man Hong Son due to the high traffic of tourists flocking the area to and from the connecting airport at Chiang Mai. Motorbikes and bicycles are also a very popular means of transportation. To access the remote hill communities one may be forced to walk on foot.
